Updated: 3:57 a.m. IST, Tuesday, November 3, 2026 | Manipur: Manipur Police has confirmed that two bodies were recovered during a joint search operation in the Kangpokpi area, after two young Kuki men went missing from Taphou Kuki village. The recovery has heightened tension in the region, and the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), a Kuki-Zo civil body, has extended its shutdown in Kangpokpi district by another 48 hours, according to Hindustan Times.

What police have confirmed

The Manipur Police website listed a November 2 update titled “Two Dead Bodies Recovered During Joint Search Operation in Kangpokpi District”. Reuters also reported, citing police statements, that the bodies of two men from the Kuki community who had gone missing earlier in the week were recovered on Sunday morning after security personnel launched a search operation.

Media reports identified the men as Thangginlun (T.) Chongloi, 21, and Paoginlal Hangsing, 20, residents of Taphou Kuki village. Reports differ on the precise district description of the recovery location; it has been described as the Kangpokpi area and as a hilly stretch near the Kangpokpi-Senapati boundary. This report therefore avoids assigning the recovery site to a more precise location than the available official and independent accounts support.

Shutdown extended through November 4

Hindustan Times reported on November 2 that CoTU extended its ongoing total shutdown in Kangpokpi district by another 48 hours. The organisation had initially called the shutdown from October 29 and extended it in stages after the two men were found dead. CoTU said it would consider further action if its demands were not addressed by 5 p.m. on November 4.

This is a shutdown called by a civil society organisation, not a statewide government curfew. Residents should check with local authorities and transport operators for current movement restrictions, road access and essential-service arrangements.

Post-mortem and investigation

Hindustan Times reported that the bodies were taken under security to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal and that post-mortem examinations were conducted on Monday, November 2. The report did not provide a final forensic finding or a confirmed motive.

CoTU and some protest groups have alleged that Naga groups were involved. Those allegations have not been established by the police statements reviewed for this report. Manipur Police has not publicly identified the perpetrators in its recovery notice. No group or individual should be treated as responsible unless investigators confirm it.

Separate gunfire incident in Noney

Reuters reported that three other Kuki men were killed in a separate exchange of gunfire between unidentified armed groups in Noney district on Saturday, October 31. Police described the armed participants as unidentified. The two body recoveries and the Noney gunfire were reported as separate incidents; no verified evidence reviewed here establishes that they were connected.

What remains unconfirmed

  • The identity of the people responsible for the two deaths.
  • The motive and any alleged organisational involvement.
  • A final forensic cause-of-death finding.
  • Whether the shutdown will be extended again after the current 48-hour period.
