Updated: November 3, 2026 | Bengaluru/New Delhi: India’s indigenous B28 high-speed trainset for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor is moving through a key manufacturing and quality-assurance phase at BEML’s Bengaluru facility. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed production at the company’s Aditya manufacturing facility on November 1 and witnessed a demonstration of the train body’s squeeze test, according to reports published by Business Standard and Financial Express.

The B28 is a train under development, not a passenger service already in operation. The current milestone is about manufacturing and testing; the train will still need further systems integration, trials and the necessary approvals before carrying passengers.

What is the B28 bullet train?

The B28, also described by the Railways as a Bharat-made bullet trainset, is being developed by BEML for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor. BEML said in its October 15, 2024 contract announcement that it had received an order from Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, to design, manufacture and commission two high-speed trainsets, each comprising eight cars. The contract was valued at ₹866.87 crore and specified a test speed of 280 kmph.

Speed, capacity and coach layout

  • Maximum test speed: 280 kmph.
  • Planned operating speed: 249 kmph, as reported from Ministry of Railways information.
  • Capacity: around 557 passengers in an eight-coach trainset.
  • Configuration: four motor cars and four trailer cars, with seven standard-class coaches and one executive-class coach.
  • Length: approximately 202 metres.

These are design and planned operating specifications, not a claim that the train has already completed high-speed passenger trials. Two eight-coach sets can be coupled for a longer 16-coach formation, according to reporting based on Railways information.

What is the squeeze test?

A squeeze test is a structural quality check in which controlled compressive and tensile forces are applied to a train car body. The test helps assess its strength, rigidity and dimensional stability. Business Standard reported on November 1 that the B28 car body was in the final stages of this testing before propulsion systems are installed and climate trials are conducted. Financial Express reported that the Railway Minister reviewed carbody fabrication, sidewall and roof assembly, module integration and other production stages during his November 1 visit.

The minister’s visit and the test demonstration should not be confused with final certification or completion of all train trials. The train still has to undergo further technical testing.

When could services begin?

The Ministry of Railways had earlier told a Parliamentary committee that the first B28 train was expected to be ready in the first quarter of 2027, after which extensive testing and trials would follow. The Railways has also outlined an initial operating plan for the 97-km Surat–Vapi section of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor, with an August 2027 target mentioned in its submission. These are planning targets and remain dependent on train testing, infrastructure readiness and approvals; they are not a confirmed public launch date.

Why the project matters

The B28 programme is an effort to develop high-speed rolling stock in India rather than rely entirely on imported trainsets. BEML’s original contract announcement described the project as India’s first indigenously designed and manufactured high-speed trainsets. The Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor is the country’s first high-speed rail project, and the B28 is intended to support its initial operations and testing programme.
