Published: 3 November 2026 (IST) | Mexico City: Kimi Antonelli has become the youngest Formula One world champion in the sport’s history after finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday, 1 November. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver secured his maiden Drivers’ Championship with four rounds of the 2026 season still to run.
Max Verstappen won the race, with Lewis Hamilton finishing second. Antonelli’s third-place result was enough to make the title mathematically secure, turning his second Formula One season into a record-breaking championship campaign.
How Antonelli secured the 2026 F1 title
Antonelli entered the 71-lap race knowing that a finish inside the top nine would be sufficient to clinch the championship, regardless of the results of his closest title rivals. Starting fourth, he kept himself in contention through a race interrupted by a red flag and a late safety-car period, then crossed the line in third place.
The result confirmed Antonelli as the youngest driver ever to win the Formula One Drivers’ Championship. At 20 years and 68 days old, he surpassed the previous age record held by Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years and 134 days old when he won his first title in 2010.
First Italian F1 champion since 1953
Antonelli’s victory also ended Italy’s long wait for a Formula One world champion. He is the first Italian to win the Drivers’ Championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953. The achievement is particularly notable because Antonelli is only in his second season at the highest level of motor racing.
Mercedes said the title was secured after Antonelli’s third-place finish, while the FIA independently confirmed the record and the historic return of an Italian champion. The championship was decided with four Grands Prix remaining on the calendar.
