Updated: 3:57 a.m. IST, Tuesday, November 3, 2026 | India: Schools and other educational institutions will remain closed in several districts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on Tuesday as authorities take precautions against severe weather linked to Cyclone Murasu. The closures are district-specific; there is no single statewide holiday order covering every school in either state.

Andhra Pradesh: Nellore and Prakasam schools closed on November 3

The Indian Express reported that all government, private and aided schools, Anganwadi centres, and government and private junior colleges in Nellore and Prakasam districts have been given a holiday on Tuesday, November 3, because of the cyclone warning and the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall. The Economic Times also lists these two districts among the areas where district administrations announced school closures.

Odisha: District-wise closure dates

  • Kandhamal: Schools up to Class 12 are closed on November 3 and 4, according to the district administration’s order reported by Odisha TV and corroborated by The Indian Express and The Economic Times.
  • Rayagada: Educational institutions are closed on November 3 and 4. The Daily Jagran reported that the District Education Office issued Office Order No. 7121/2026 on November 2; the Economic Times also lists Rayagada among the districts with a two-day closure.
  • Malkangiri: Schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres remain closed from November 2 through November 4. The New Indian Express reported the district administration’s order, while Prameya reproduced the Odisha Information and Public Relations Department’s public notice confirming the closure period.

What parents and students should check

These are local administrative orders, not a blanket closure for all of Andhra Pradesh or Odisha. Families should check their own district Collector’s latest notice and confirm directly with the school or college before travelling. A school holiday does not automatically mean that every scheduled examination has been postponed; follow the relevant board, university or examination authority for exam-specific instructions.

In Malkangiri, the district administration said school buildings may be used as temporary shelters and teaching and non-teaching staff may be assigned relief and restoration duties. Students should not visit school premises unless instructed by their institution or local authorities.

Cyclone safety

Residents in areas under weather alerts should follow the latest India Meteorological Department bulletins and district administration instructions. Avoid flooded roads, streams, fallen trees and power lines, and do not approach the coast during rough-sea warnings. For emergency movement, use designated shelters and official district helplines.
