Patna, October 25, 2026: Janata Dal (United) has expelled Mokama MLA Anant Kumar Singh and former MLA Neelam Devi from the party for six years, citing alleged anti-party activities. The decision follows Singh’s public support for Jan Suraaj Party candidate Anuj Singh against the JD(U)’s nominee in the recent Bihar Legislative Council election.

Party cites alleged indiscipline

In an office order, Bihar JD(U) president Umesh Singh Kushwaha said Singh had disregarded party directives, made objectionable remarks about senior leaders and campaigned for another party’s candidate. The party cancelled his primary membership with immediate effect. Neelam Devi’s membership was also cancelled over her alleged involvement in anti-party activities.

Request to Assembly Speaker

The party has asked the Bihar Legislative Assembly Speaker to consider action concerning Singh’s membership under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, which deals with disqualification on grounds of defection. Any decision on his Assembly status would be a separate process from the party’s disciplinary action.

What triggered the dispute?

The disagreement centred on the Patna Graduates’ constituency election to the Legislative Council. JD(U) backed sitting MLC Neeraj Kumar, while Singh campaigned for Jan Suraaj’s Anuj Singh. The party’s action marks a further escalation in the rift between the Mokama MLA and JD(U) leadership.

The reasons for expulsion are the party’s stated allegations; the report does not treat them as independent findings.
