New Delhi, October 22, 2026: India’s crude oil import mix shifted in September, with supplies from West Asia rising to levels last seen before the recent regional conflict, while imports of Russian crude declined from the previous month. Shipping data indicated that India imported about 2.8 million barrels per day from West Asia during September, accounting for approximately 54 per cent of its crude purchases.

Russian oil imports fell 14 per cent month-on-month to around 1.8 million barrels per day, according to the same shipping data. The figures point to a changing balance among suppliers as refiners respond to availability, prices, freight costs, payment arrangements and the commercial terms of individual cargoes.

Why India’s import mix matters

India relies heavily on imported crude oil to meet domestic energy demand. The source of those imports can influence freight expenses, delivery schedules, refinery planning and the country’s exposure to geopolitical disruption. A higher share of supplies from one region does not necessarily mean a permanent change in strategy, as refiners regularly adjust purchases according to market conditions and the grades of crude their facilities can process.

What to watch next

Energy-market participants will be watching global prices, shipping routes, insurance costs and the stability of supply from major producing regions. A shift in import volumes can also affect the timing of cargo arrivals and competition for particular grades of crude. Monthly data should be read as a snapshot rather than a guarantee of future buying patterns.

For consumers and businesses, the broader concern remains the cost of energy. International crude prices, the rupee’s exchange rate, refining margins, domestic taxes and fuel-pricing decisions all influence the final cost of petroleum products. The latest import figures underline the importance of maintaining diversified and dependable supply options as India balances energy security with affordability.
