The United States has imposed sanctions on Chandigarh-based businessman Suniel Kumar Sharma, his wife Jaspreet Preeti Shahid and a network of associated companies over alleged support for Iran’s oil-shipping operations, according to the US Department of the Treasury.

Announced on November 4 under the US operation titled “Economic Outcast”, the measures target what the Treasury describes as a maritime fraud network that allegedly helped vessels carrying Iranian petroleum operate using false flags and certifications.

What the US Treasury alleges

The Treasury says the network used entities and purported ship registries in multiple jurisdictions to provide flagging and maritime services to vessels transporting Iranian oil. It alleges that some of the vessels were connected to Iran’s military or its proxies.

According to the department, Sharma operated through India-based businesses, including Oceaniek Technologies India. The Treasury also named Aryavart Ship Management Private Limited and several other India-based entities in its designation announcement.

These are allegations made by the US government. The sanctions announcement is not, by itself, a judicial finding of guilt by an Indian court.

Why the sanctions matter

The action highlights the growing scrutiny of ship registries, maritime certification providers and intermediaries suspected of helping sanctioned oil shipments move through international waters. Such designations can restrict access to US-linked financial services and property under US jurisdiction.

The case may also draw attention to compliance checks by shipping, insurance, banking and maritime-services firms that deal with vessels or entities connected to high-risk jurisdictions.
