New Delhi, November 5, 2026: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the umbrella organisation that operates key retail payment systems including the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), has established a wholly owned technology subsidiary named NPCI Tech Solutions Limited (NTSL).
The new company is intended to serve as the NPCI group’s technology and innovation arm, with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, digital financial infrastructure and global capability centre services. NPCI announced the development on November 4.
Vishal Kanvaty appointed MD and CEO
NPCI’s Chief Technology Officer Vishal Kanvaty has been appointed managing director and chief executive officer of NTSL. He has been associated with NPCI since 2017 and has worked across product, innovation and technology roles.
What will the new subsidiary do?
According to NPCI’s announcement, NTSL will build technology capabilities beyond the organisation’s core payments mandate. Its work is expected to include services for digital public infrastructure programmes, including eKYC Setu and the Unified Ticketing Platform, alongside emerging technology initiatives.
The move comes as India expands the use of digital public infrastructure across payments, identity verification, transport and financial services. NPCI operates systems including UPI, RuPay, IMPS, NACH, FASTag-based National Electronic Toll Collection and the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System.
Why it matters
A dedicated technology subsidiary could allow NPCI to develop and deliver technology services separately from its day-to-day payment network operations. The announcement identifies AI and blockchain as priority areas, but it does not specify a public launch timetable or financial targets for the subsidiary.
NPCI is incorporated as a not-for-profit company and was set up by the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks’ Association.
