New Delhi, October 27, 2026: A political dispute between the BJP and Congress has intensified after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge made a remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s father during an event in Patna on October 25. The BJP described the comment as offensive and announced nationwide protests for Monday, October 26.

What happened in Patna?

The Times of India reported that Kharge was interrupted by an audience member who said that Modi would not leave office. Kharge replied, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega.” Organisers removed the audience member from the venue. BJP leaders subsequently condemned the remark and called for protests.

Wider dispute over electoral rolls

The exchange took place during a speech in which Kharge also criticised the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged that the process threatened voting rights. He called for the revision to be rolled back and advocated the use of ballot papers. Those claims are political allegations and should be assessed against the Election Commission’s published procedures and evidence.

Political responses

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other BJP leaders criticised Kharge’s language. The episode adds to the ongoing confrontation between the ruling party and the opposition over political rhetoric, electoral processes and the conduct of public debate. This article reports the statements and responses without treating either side’s political claims as established findings.
