Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India may get five to eight more semiconductor plants in the next seven to eight years, as the country pushes to establish itself as a major chip manufacturing hub. The projection came during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort.
India has already approved several semiconductor fabrication and packaging units under a Rs 76,000 crore incentive scheme. The government aims to reduce dependence on imports and position India as a trusted partner in global semiconductor supply chains. The announcement reinforces the technology pillar of the newly unveiled Sapta Dhara framework.
