Chamoli, October 31, 2026: All six people aboard a helicopter were killed after the aircraft crashed near Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Friday. The helicopter was carrying five passengers and a pilot while returning from Badrinath to Dehradun.
According to the Associated Press, the aircraft lost contact while crossing the Joshimath valley. Wreckage was located near Chhai village, and authorities recovered all six bodies. Rain and poor visibility made rescue operations more difficult.
Crash raises safety questions
Helicopters are regularly used to transport pilgrims to high-altitude shrines during the Char Dham pilgrimage season. The accident has renewed concerns about aviation safety in mountainous terrain, where weather can change rapidly and visibility can deteriorate.
AP cited official figures showing 12 helicopter crashes in Uttarakhand between 2016 and 2026, resulting in 21 deaths. The cause of the latest crash will need to be established through the formal investigation.
What investigators will examine
Investigators are expected to assess weather conditions, flight operations, aircraft maintenance and other operational factors. No cause should be assumed until the authorities complete their inquiry.
