Pakistan and the Maldives have signed 20 memoranda of understanding covering areas including defence, maritime security, artificial intelligence and trade, according to reports during Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit.
The agreements indicate an effort to broaden bilateral cooperation across security and economic fields. The practical effect will depend on the terms of each memorandum, implementation arrangements and follow-up work by the two governments.
Regional context
Maritime security and trade remain important issues for countries in the Indian Ocean region. Announced memoranda do not necessarily represent completed projects, and details of implementation will matter in assessing their impact.
