Activist Sonam Wangchuk has issued a call for what he describes as a “peaceful revolution” in India’s political leadership selection process. In a video message released ahead of Independence Day, Wangchuk argued that the country needs fundamental change to remain a “respectable nation” by 2047.
Wangchuk, who has been unwell in recent days, said he spent his recovery time reflecting on India’s trajectory. He pointed out that neighbouring countries which were once behind or equal to India — including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh — have now “gone miles away” in terms of development indicators.
The activist urged citizens to propose “selfless, fearless men and women of character and substance” who could help shape the country’s future. He characterised his initiative as “India’s second independence movement,” emphasising that per capita GDP comparisons suggest India is falling behind its regional peers.
