A tragic accident at a THDC hydroelectric project tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district has claimed the lives of seven workers after water and debris suddenly rushed into the structure. The incident occurred while approximately 20 to 22 workers were present inside the tunnel, according to THDC Executive Director (Projects) Kumar Sharad.
Rescue operations were launched immediately after the accident, with emergency teams working to account for all personnel who were inside the tunnel at the time of the flooding. The challenging terrain and remote location of the project site have complicated the rescue efforts.
The incident has once again raised concerns about worker safety at major infrastructure projects in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the flooding and whether adequate safety protocols were in place at the site.
