A parliamentary panel has put forward ambitious proposals to transform India’s bus terminals with airport-style amenities and management standards. The recommendations include the creation of a national authority to oversee bus terminal operations across the country.
The panel has called for common terminal standards that would apply uniformly, along with a fee-based access system for private bus operators. The proposals also encompass digital permits and comprehensive safety reforms aimed at modernising the country’s bus transport infrastructure.
If implemented, the overhaul would bring much-needed standardisation to India’s bus terminals, which currently vary widely in quality and facilities. The push for private sector participation through fee-based access is expected to inject competition and improve service quality for millions of daily commuters.
