India has opened its nuclear power sector to proven foreign reactor technology, according to draft rules that allow private companies to seek in-principle approval for vendor tie-ups, land acquisition and preliminary work. Nuclear projects will face stage-wise regulatory scrutiny.
The move represents a significant policy shift aimed at accelerating the country’s civilian nuclear programme. It could attract international reactor vendors and private investment into a sector that has historically been dominated by state-owned entities. The framework would allow foreign technology partnerships while maintaining regulatory oversight through the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.
