Bengaluru’s civic authorities have unveiled draft parking regulations that could see residents paying substantial annual fees to park their vehicles on public roads. The proposed Greater Bengaluru Area (GBA) Parking Rules, 2026, introduce a tiered pricing structure based on vehicle type.
Under the draft rules, hatchback owners would need to pay Rs 15,000 annually, while sedan owners face a Rs 20,000 fee. Sports utility vehicle owners could be charged up to Rs 25,000 per year for the privilege of roadside parking.
The regulations stipulate that residential parking permits will only be issued to residents of buildings that meet the minimum on-site parking requirements laid out in the city’s building bye-laws. This means residents of older buildings or homes without adequate designated parking may find themselves ineligible for permits altogether.
Parking on arterial and sub-arterial roads would remain prohibited regardless of permit status, and vehicles parked on other public roads without a valid permit could face legal consequences. The move is part of the city’s broader push to manage its worsening traffic and parking congestion.
